Bali has many Hindu temples. Each village is required by adat (customary law) to build and maintain at least three temples: the puseh Pura (original temple) located next to the village, the village temple, the community activity center and the Dalem Pura. (temple of the dead).
The nine temples (Kayangan Jagat) are the most important and famous temples in Bali. They are located at strategic points in Bali and are designed to protect the island and its inhabitants from dark forces. For the Balinese, the “mother temple” of Besakih, on the slopes of Mount Agung, is the most important of all.
The other temples are: Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, Pura Ulun Danu Batur, Pura Pasar Agung, Pura Lempuyang Luhur, Goa Lawah, Pura Masceti and Pura Luhur Batukaru. Visitors are permitted to enter the temples provided they are dressed accordingly and the visit takes place outside of ceremonies.
Things to see and do in Bali: must-sees
The evocation of Bali immediately brings to mind its beautiful beaches, concentrated in the south of the island, as well as the essential tourist infrastructures: the typical example is Kuta, its waves and its lively nights.
But the cultural life of the island is very present, as illustrated by the charming town of Ubud, in the center of Bali, which is surrounded by another of the landscape specialties of the island, the vast multi-storey rice fields.
Further on, the relief is seriously accentuated, on the side of the active volcanoes of the island: a disturbing hike is assured, then the hot springs of Banjar also constitute a passage.
